Sasan Aghaei, a 29 year old journalist, had worked for newspapers such as Etemad, Yaseh No, Farhikhtegan, Hambastegi and Tose’ah. Prior to the 2009 Iranian elections, he was the editor in chief of Khordad newspaper. He was also a blogger for the Teribun Azad blog which was blocked by the Persian Blog service. Additonally, he was the editor of 10 issues of Sobh Azadi newspaper in 2009.
First Detainmnet
He had been detaied twice prior to his current arrest. He spent two weeks in solitary confinmnet for preparing a report on the anniversary of the July 1998 student movemnet.
Second Detainmnet
Aghaei was detained in 2009 after signing and publishing a letter of 293 journalists to the clergies and was taken to Ward 209 of Evin Priosn. He spent 38 days in solitary confinement and was later taken to a two people cell. In February of that year, he was transferred to Ward 350 which was a section in which post-election political prisoners were held. He was charged with anti-regime propaganda, libel to disrupt public order and acting against national security.
His lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei told ILNA news agency that his cliet’s arrest warrant was extended even though extension should be based on the seriousness of crime, available evidence, past criminal record and flight risk possibility.
Judge Moghayeseh issued him bail in March of 2009 and his family provided the bail amount and were issued his release letter but Evin Prison and security officials  prevented his release. He was released on bail later in the month.
Charges and Court Verdict
In 2010, he was sentenced to one year in prison for anti-regime propaganda.
Third Detainment
Aghaei was detained during a raid on journalists in January of 2013. The Intelligence Ministry authorities raided the offices of Shargh, Bahar, Etemad, Arman newspapers and Aseman weekly magazine, searched the offices and confiscated the computers. Twelve journalists including Aghaei were detained in the raid.
Following the arrest, Reporters without Borders published a statement regarding the “Black Sunday” demanding that all journalists who are political prisoners to be released. They stated that the Islamic Republic should put an end to the arrests which are aimed to stabilize the regime and should know that the outcome of such actions is defeat.
The Intelligence Ministry has made baseless claims in January of 2013 which linked the detained journalists to BBC along with several western governments. The Ministry said that a network was formed using the experiences of the 2009 post-election unrest. The statement added that the network was multi-layered and had made use of specific communication techniques. According to the Ministry, they were monitored by intelligence agents for months, until the necessary information and evidence were collected and action was taken.
